NOTE: PortFringe will be profiling PF14 Artists and their shows on this blog in the weeks leading up to the festival (June 24-29, 2014). We are pleased to kick off this new series with local theater artist (and dedicated PortFringe volunteer and supporter), Joe Quinn!
Artist: Joe Quinn – adapter, director and actor, “M4M”
Description: Love. Betrayal. Justice. Mercy. Surveillance. Manipulation.
Tell us something we don’t know about you and your PortFringe show.
M4M, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure”, has been rattling around in my brain since I first encountered the play as a freshman at Princeton University. As a “problem play”, it is full of gray areas – no one is entirely right or entirely wrong. By focusing on the main characters, we can highlight how the themes of the play – the abuse of power, the balance of justice and mercy – reveal their inner strengths and weaknesses: as one character says, “Hence shall we see,/If power change purpose, what our seemers be.”
What are you most looking forward to about PortFringe 2014?
I look forward to PortFringe for the creative energy that suffuses the city during the run of the shows – running up and down the street to different venues, seeing shows that are unlike anything else you are likely to see during the course of the year, whose contrast with one another adds to the vitality of the event.
