REVIEWS: Brett Johnson: Poly-Theist

Brett Johnson shares with the audience a uniquely poignant story, with humor and deep sensitivity for the subject matter, which is personal, walking us through his journeys: with relationships, and with his faith. I laughed with familiarity as he describes a rigorous religious upbringing, with all the accompanying contradictions and mores. “Making out in a church – show of hands?” After regailing us with the highs and lows of his just-out-of-college marriage with his wife, he tells us how they, together, opened their relationship to others, and where that has led them. At the heart of the story is learning to listen to your heart to ask for what you need, and recognizing that perfect isn’t something we are, it is something we do.

Sharing his experiences as a young conservative Christian who begins to question his beliefs regarding religion, sex and relationships, Brett Johnson does an excellent job of combing the style of stand-up with intimate story-telling. Johnson is extremely likable as he uses humor and just the right amount of emotion in telling his thought provoking and ultimately inspiring tale.
