Instead of relying on well-earned, sincerely-given superlatives to express the impact of this solo performance, I’m going to share two uncomfortable truths:
(1) I saw a lot of my own personal experience reflected back to me in this performance.
(2) This is a story about abuse. Not the grotesque abuse-porn that CSI has built a franchise out of. The pedestrian, ubiquitous, mental and physical abuse that can be found in every corner of America. The abuse that child have sprung on them by their most trusted adults. The abuse women tolerate out of desperation and poverty. The abuse that’s the entitled way and means of too many men irrespective of class, religion, or race. Which is to say: the abuse that all of us are recovering from or coping with, whether we recognize it or not, simply by virtue of living in the United States.
