PF14 Artist Snapshot: Dramatic Repertory Company presents “Contractions”

NOTE: PortFringe will be profiling PF14 Artists and their shows on this blog in the weeks leading up to the festival (June 24-29, 2014). The next snapshot is of Portland’s own Dramatic Repertory Company. DRC presented THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY OF STEVE JOBS at PortFringe 2012, and returns this year with another exciting project.

Artist: Dramatic Repertory Company
Show: Contractions
Description: ‘Come in. Sit down. How are you?’
Emma’s been seeing Darren. She thinks she’s in love. Her boss thinks she’s in breach of contract. The situation needs to be resolved. Kat Moraros (PSC’s Tribes) and Janice O’Rourke (2013 PEER Award winner for Best Supporting Actress in DRC’s Swimming in the Shallows) star in this ink-black comedy about what is “best for the Company”.

Tell us something we don’t know about you/your company, and your PortFringe show.

Mike Bartlett is one of the most exciting new writers DRC has come across in some time.  His plays are deeply enmeshed in vivid (and vicious) language, and an innate and compelling theatricality.  He has a way of writing characters whose words ring true, yet are absolutely absurd at the same time.  CONTRACTIONS gives us a very recognizable Manager/Employee conversation that quickly takes a darkly comic turn, and draws the audience along for a rollercoaster ride.

What are you most looking forward to about PortFringe 2014?

DRC greatly looks forward to introducing Portland to Mike Bartlett’s intricate and compelling words.  We also are beyond thrilled to convince Janice O’Rourke to appear with us again, after her award-winning turn as “Carla Carla” in SWIMMING IN THE SHALLOWS.  She is an incredible performer that we do not see enough on stage these days.  That we get to pair her with Kat Moraros, a rising star on the local scene who appeared this season in PSC’s TRIBES, only heightens our anticipation.

Lobster, or Steak? Discuss.

Speaking only for myself (Keith) – steak.  Despite having lived in Maine for well over a decade, I never really saw the appeal of eating the bottom-feeding cockroach of the sea.  Then again, I’d probably eat Styrofoam dipped in large amounts of drawn butter!
