PF14 Artist Snapshot: Israel Buffardi presents “Réflexions d’un Hédoniste Râleur: The Rantings of a Very Hungry Frenchman”

NOTE: PortFringe will be profiling PF14 Artists and their shows on this blog in the weeks leading up to the festival (June 24-29, 2014). The next snapshot is of PortFringe newcomer, Israel Buffardi – bringing to life a colorful character in an original one-man show.

Artist: Israel Buffardi
Show: Réflexions d’un Hédoniste Râleur: The Rantings of a Very Hungry Frenchman
Description: As the title suggests, come revel in the rantings of a very hungry, often humorous, occasionally musical Frenchman who explores and shares the pleasures of wine, cheese, life and love. Come satisfy your hunger and feed your soul. Bon Appetit!

Tell us something we don’t know about you/your company, and your PortFringe show.

I wrote the original version of this piece as part of a collaborative performance that revolved around an artistic game of telephone.  We had one week to write a piece in response to the following prompt, a fortune cookie that read: “It is not the outside riches but the inside ones that produce happiness.” So I got to thinking, about the heavy questions of what produces happiness.

After some (actually a lot of) procrastinating and a bottle of wine, the answer, or rather the question came to me:

What are my simple pleasures?

My piece is about my simple pleasures: cheese, wine, music, good company, great love, and dressing like a Breton fisherman.

Also, I am an experienced cook and foodie, please check out my food blog:

What are you most looking forward to about PortFringe 2014?

I am relatively new to the Portland theatre scene (have only lived here for a year), and am really looking forward to getting to know all of the incredibly talented artists who live in our amazing city!  I am also so grateful to the PortFringe festival for bringing us all together.  I aim to see as many shows as I am able to.  I can’t wait to see what inspirational
things people are doing!

Lobster or Steak? Discuss.

I’ll take a t-bone from local grass fed beef, seared on the outside, still bloody on the inside.  I’d pretend to be civilized at first, cutting into it with a sharp serrated blade like a skilled, but after three bites, I pick the whole thing up and eat it with my hands.  Chewing on the bone is my favorite part; I truly channel my inner caveman.  By the time the event is over, I’ve chewed through every morsel of fat and gristle clinging to the bones.  The bones themselves, I’ve chewed through them too and sucked out as much marrow as I could, turning them into splintered hollow straws.  I’d have a bitter herb salad and a shot of Ouzo for digestion.  Like I said: Simple Pleasures
