PF14 Family Fringe! Artist Snapshot: Roger James Kuhns presents “Dream Time Down Under”

NOTE: PortFringe will be profiling PF14 Artists and their shows on this blog in the weeks leading up to the festival (June 24-29, 2014). The next snapshot is of geologist/writer Roger James Kuhns of Mystic, CT – bringing his original show to PortFringe for the first time. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the inaugural FAMILY FRINGE festival!

Artist: Roger James Kuhns
Show: Dream Time Down Under
Description: Join geologist/writer Roger Kuhns on this true-life adventure with his artist/scientist friend Oliver as they explore for gold in Australia’s outback. The land is vast and rich in unique trees and wildlife, underpinned by ancient volcanoes and ocean beds, and interfused with mystic beliefs and precious minerals. Roger and Oliver search for meaning and purpose, while entering this dramatic and sometimes humorous dreamtime realm. Kuhns sat around an Aboriginal campfire in dreamtime, encountered saltwater crocodiles and venomous snakes, and wondered at the art of ancient cultures in lands turned upside down by tribalism, colonialism and modern business.

Tell us something we might not know about you/your company and your PortFringe show.

My show is an adventure through time and culture and geology and nature, and the development of a great friendship during turbulent times in Australia. It is a true tale, and I include some art and music in the Spaulding Gray style monologue. I’ve been fortunate to wander the world, living and working in over 70 countries, and living in several African countries for 8 years, and working in Australia on and off for more than a year. I love nature, and write about that, but also include how we interact with it, how it influences what we do and where we live, and then the interrelationships between natural happenings, geology, communities, businesses we work for, and friendships along the way. I love finding the comedy in life, but also write about the dramatic sides. I’ve written and performed about a dozen monologues, and Dream Time Down Under is a very personal and important story for me.

What are you most looking forward to about PortFringe 2014?

I am really looking forward for the chance to perform for PortFinge folks, and also very excited about seeing as many shows as I can and meeting the artists. I think the diversity, creativity and innovation drive all of our performances, and to have this opportunity really is a privilege. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Lobster, or Steak? Discuss.

It’s gotta be lobster…Maine…I worked in Bangor for a short while a couple decades ago, and love the life story of lobsters, the fishermen, the boats and the sea…and of course the “Lobsta” on a plate with some butter to dip it in (I ate at Captain Nicks in Bangor…don’t know if its still there).
