PF-21 ARTIST INTERVIEW – Catherine Siller

A moment with Catherine Siller of THE REVEAL

Why did you choose PortFringe this year? Because of the pandemic, I turned my newest performance into a video. PortFringe’s all virtual format made it the perfect place to test out this new work! Plus, I love Portland. It’s one of my favorite places to visit.

How was your PortFringe show born? I’ve always struggled with society’s expectations around being a woman. I’m so grateful to my queer and trans friends who have taught me we can throw these expectations out. The Reveal started through conversations with these folks about how you unlearn the gender norms and expectations that have been imposed on you from birth.

What about the world *right now* makes your show important? States from New Hampshire to Texas are currently pursuing or have passed anti-trans bills – legislation that targets trans athletes and/or blocks access to trans affirming health care.  It’s crucial that we normalize transness and affirm that trans rights are human rights. And this will actually benefit all of us. Every single one of us will be freer to be ourselves if we get rid of the gender binary and the crazy societal expectations that come with it.

What have you learned as an artist during the last year of pandemic times? Collaborators and consistency are key. Just keep coming together any way you can to make the work.

Why is FRINGE important? Non-juried festivals are so necessary! For artists, Fringe offers a supportive space to take risks and try new ideas. The inclusivity and sense of community are essential. And with the wide range of artists, perspectives, and types of performance, there’s truly something for every audience member.

It’s PortFringe’s 10th Birthday! What do you remember or miss about being ten years old?
Long, lazy summers with nothing to do!

Have you checked out the other PF21 show listings? Pick one you’re excited to see or learn more about, and tell us why! I’m excited to watch Penny- The Conduit. It sounds like it will offer some catharsis for the past year of pandemic life.
