May We/ (Mais Oui) is a bird of a thing: fragile, hollow boned, light. And it flies. The actors, Mary Kate Gilrein and Crystal Vaccaro never “entered” the stage. They were there before we got there. This piece is like their entrance: something that is already in the room but we will overlook it. And overlooking it would be a mistake. After I watched this piece I was in the park and a little boy was approaching a bird. The bird took flight and the boy was very startled. “It flies,” he said, completely confounded that a bird could just take off and fly away. I don’t know if there are many if any mentions of birds in Mais Oui. But the actors used all the random (to my eye) things on the stage throughout the piece with precision. While watching it, I was startled by the way they wrapped all the pieces together. I was the little boy watching the thing take flight, startled and enrapt as it took off, wanting to see it again.
