Performance 6/20/25 – Mechanics Hall

As you watch A Tincture of Time, you know you’re seeing something personal, something that comes from a very real experience that took a very unreal turn. A fictitious examination of a ‘telepathic transmission’ procedure in an imagined hospital-like setting, this show feels deliberate and confident, with a diy sensibility and an obvious nod to community as a source of healing and art. It’s a hard one to describe, and the lengthy scene changes might challenge and those who are here for ‘Theater’ with a capital T. But I found myself drawn into to the slow pace, the handmade props, and the almost psychedelic imagery created through a series of colored projections and lights.  There were some issues with audibility of the performances, largely due to the echoey nature of the giant Mechanics Hall Ballroom, and at times the scenery and props begin to overwhelm the intimate story about a woman and her offspring in strange place together. But it’s clear that the artists want to take their time, and there’s a specific honor that they pay to their vision that I couldn’t help but celebrate with them. Fringe is supposed to be about raw, honest work, and there’s no doubt that what is happening in Tincture is Fringe at it’s Fringiest.

Performance 6/23/25 – Rising Tide Brewing

My child was in the hospital for a little over a month once.  At first, we/they didn’t know what was wrong with him.  Then we/they didn’t know how to make him well.  A Tincture of Time captured very much what that hospital stay was like for me as a parent of a sick child.

A Tincture of Time is largely visual with minimal dialogue.  Amelia Garrentson-Persans has created some beautiful effects that were truly enchanting.  This piece cuts right to the heart of what fringe is.
