Performance 6/13/26 – The Apohadion

If you like Fringy Fringe, stop what you are doing and go see Janoah the Jester at the Apohadian Theater (itself a very fringy kind of joint). Janoah, by any measure, is a talented performer with a powerful story of coping with years chronic pain felt in exactly one half the body. Layered stories cascaded against a backdrop of jester craft- unicycle strip tease, juggling, folk tales, songs, video, props and costumes- all of which was skillfully done. Even more skillful was Janoah’s clownish rapport with the audience, in particular when juggling implements fell or other performance elements went off the rails.

Jonoah’s being non-binary was visually and narratively prominent, a fascinating contrast to the absolutely binary reality of a body that is half one thing and half another. Ze wove these contrasts expertly, amplifying them through tales whose characters are unusually cleaved in half or fused together. Ze sang two songs, both abrasive yarns which I disliked because I found them ugly. That was probably the point. Pain is ugly, untidy, and hard to make peace with. But what’s the alternative, war?

So, spread the word Fringophiles. Put this one on your list.

Performance 6/15/26 – The Apohadion

It opens with maybe a first anywhere on stage: a strip tease on a unicycle within the square footage of maybe 10! loved it! Then, feats of skilled juggling, storytelling thru song, video, and life snapshots. Themes of duality in body, soul, and costume. There is a lot here to explore with this talented and likable performer. A sufferer of chronic pain myself, I appreciated the journey, especially as “no pity” was demanded. Sometimes pure circus, sometimes edgy, weird fringe. Thanks for sharing, Janoah!
